What just happened at City Hall?

Tuesday afternoon was a big win for tiny house enthusiasts across Los Angeles and beyond. The Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) committee met today to discuss the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) ordinance. The room was packed full of people both in support and against ADUs. Over a dozen people took the time to trek to beautiful City Hall and comment in support of adding language for movable tiny houses in the ADU ordinance. Most everyone had never before made a public comment in City Hall, but together we worked up the courage, stepped up to the mic, and were heard.

And guess what?

Council member Huizar (CD14) voiced support for our movable tiny house comments and suggested that the legal office create language for movable tiny houses! And there was NO objections or further comments from any other council member on PLUM!! This was a highly anticipated moment, and a wonderful success.

What does this mean for legally living tiny in LA?

The City’s legal office will work with the City’s Planning Department  to draft language for movable tiny houses over the next few weeks. Soon (but we don’t yet know exactly when) the final ADU ordinance with the tiny house language will go to the entire City Council for a vote.

THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

We are SO CLOSE to having a legal avenue for living tiny in Los Angeles. Even if you don’t live in the City of LA, or desire to live in the backyard, this will set precedent for an understanding of this housing option in the LA area and allow this opportunity to be utilized by other municipalities and possibly in a wider range of ways.

We NEED to do more outreach getting all council members on board. We’ve already caught word that while most council members are supportive of tiny houses as ADUs, there are some who are not. As far as we know, we need more than a majority of our council members to vote in support of this ordinance.

Your voice is needed – speak up in support of Tiny Houses on March 21st!

The City of LA’s Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) committee will meet this  Tuesday March 21st to discuss the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) ordinance, and will be discussing the possibility of adding Movable Tiny Houses as accepted ADUs. You can see the agenda here – ADUs are item number 7 (council file here).

COMMITTEE MEETING INFORMATION:
2:30 pm. ROOM 340, City Hall, 200 North Spring Street, LA.

Please consider coming out and making a public comment in support of the ADU ordinance and in support of adding Movable Tiny Houses. Each person will get one minute to talk, and because we’d like to make the most of our comments, we will be meeting before the meeting to make a strategy. This meeting will replace our previously scheduled Tiny Advocacy Network meeting.

PRE-HEARING TINY ADVOCACY NETWORK MEETING

 12:30 pm Tuesday March 31st
@ Civic Park across from City Hall.  Specifically, at the pink tables and chairs between the restrooms and the play structure.

PUBLIC COMMENT TIPS
1. Make sure you see the city clerk when you enter the hearing, and submit a public comment card.
2. If you have any documents you’d like to submit to the PLUM committee to review, have about 10 copies prepared and submit them with your public comment card.
3. Start out by thanking City Council and expressing your support for the proposed ADU ordinance amendments. Follow by urging City Council to also include movable tiny Houses as ADUs.
4. Decide on a specific benefit of Tiny Houses for the City that you’d like to promote … sustainability, increasing housing supply, easy infill, easy on the City’s budget, supporting homeowners, reducing homelessness, student, introduction to the housing market, etc…
5. Keep it interesting – don’t repeat the same points as others have already made.
